Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is concerned with the further development of normal incidence of X-ray standing waves (NIXSW), a technique first developed by the applicants at the SRS, to the quantitative demonstration of local structure in chemisorption phases. The proposed programme concentrates on exploiting the greatly-enhanced potential of the ESRF in Grenoble using a recently-commissioned beamline. New opportunities are offered by the massive combined increase in flux and resolution on this beamline. We plan to extend NIXSW to investigate low atomic number species (atoms and in molecules) on transition metals, local adsorbate geometry at low coverage and to exploit 'chemical shift' NIXSW to determine the local adsorption geometries of coadsorbates. Most of these experiments require the X-ray absorption to be monitored via the photoemmission signal, and we have recently found evidence for substantial contributions from non-dipole (quadrupole and magnetic dipole) effects in these signals which influences the NIXSM interpretation. We propose to characterise and quantify this effect, mostly through experiments at the SRS, where complete structural studies will also be undertaken on systems too complex to be achieved in the short (10 day) ESRF beamtime allocation periods but nevertheless which can be studied with the lower SRS flux.
