Conjugated polymers are attracting strong interest as materials for electronics and optoelectronics. This project addresses research on thermotropic liquid crystalline conjugated polymers, concentrating on main chain systems and especially on fully conjugated materials. It covers synthesis, characterisation, preparation of ordered and oriented films (including guesthost blend films), and electroluminescent device fabrication and testing. Thermotropic mesophase formation provides a methodology for achieving better ordered (monodomain) thin film samples which may be oriented or not, according to the use of any alignment procedures (orienting layers, magnetic fields, etc). Oriented films provide access to polarized electroluminescence and are thus of interest.The polymers to be studied during the project are of both the rigid rod separated by flexible spacer (with arylene vinylene rigid segments) and fully conjugated homo- and co-polymers based on phenylene, fluorene and arylene vinylene moieties. We have already had success in our initial studies by obtaining thermotropic mesophases and preparing well oriented polymer films and here we propose to undertake a fuller and more systematic study. Polarised EL devices are a specific target for development and initial studies look very promising.
