Summary on Grant Application Form
Recent work being undertaken by the proposer (and others) on the dynamic analysis of 3-D beams, including those associated with flexible rotating systems, has demonstrated severe shortcomings in current finite element procedures. The proposer has conducted a literature survey which demonstrates precisely the same flawed procedures (Newmark and Alpha methods) are used in the marine environment. It follows that important questions must be asked about the accuracy of current methods. The proposal is intended to answer these questions and to develop robust and accurate modern techniques. The research will build on work that the proposer is just completing on two EPSRC projects which have devised solution procedures (unlike current methods) are guaranteed to be stable even with large deformations. This work was largely related to Hamiltonian systems. However, in the later stages of the research, the first steps were taken in extending the techniques to add dissipation. In the proposed work, it is intended to extend the latter with emphasis on the frictional, drag and other hydrodynamic forms associated with the marine environment.
