Summary on Grant Application Form
This project is concerned with the accurate simluation of transient three phase flows of the watre/oil/gas type, particularly in the stratified regime. Progress in this area reqires both sophisticated physical models and improved solution algorithms. This work will address both types if issues in a coordinated work in order to provide the oil industry with tools which are of direct use for engineering design and operation. The modelling will build on current work, particularly at Imperial College, and will focus on providing accurate closure relationships for interphase mixing. The problem of phase invesrion will be particularly examined as it can greatly affect the dynamics of the flow. In parallel, efficient solution algorithms will be developed, based on adaptive coupled mulitgrid techniques. These methods are well suited to the solution of complex systems such as those arising in multiphase flow simulation. The models and solution algorithms will be implemented in a test-bed computer code and validation will be undertaken on industrially relevant problems.
