Summary on Grant Application Form
The research programme to determine, at a microscopic scale, the fundamental mechanisms of solid formation at a single pore (capillary tube) using high speed video photography and other methods. From this particle growth and formation mechanisms will be established under different conditions. Research will involve design and fabrication of a laboratory apparatus to manufacture solids using a cylindrical membrane tube. This will require careful attention to the design and selection of high specification membranes themselves (obtained via the collaborators) the chemistry of the discontinuous ond continuous phases, transmembrane pressure, crossflow velocity and rheology of the product mixture. Production of the three classes of soldis will be tested using the apparatus and the operational characteristics and modle for particle size, production rates etc will be formulated. This includes the production of microcapsules with aqueous cores. The final stage of the work will involve the verification of the predictions be performing tests on one of the materials but on a continuous basis and demonstating the tunability of the process to manufacture the particlate products.
