Summary on Grant Application Form
Microencapsulation has a wide range of applications in science, tehcnology and medicine. In most appliations, it is essential that microcapsules should have appropriate mechanical properties. However, up to now even the mechanical strength of microcapsules remain largely uncharacterised remains largely uncharacterised. The proposed work will investigate the mechanical properties of single microcapsules using anovel micromanipulation techniqeu which has been developed previously by the applicant single microcapsules of different sizes, wall thicknesses and types of materials will be squeezed up to rupture between two parallel planes. The forces being imposed on single microcapsules and their deformation will be measured and modelled in order to quantify their mechanical properties. This will allow to identify the causes of the variations of the strengths of microcapsules made of different formulations, and to determine appropriate stategies for making microcapsules with the desired strength.
