Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to establish a facility which will allow the study of metals on oxide substrates at elevated temperatures using scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) operating in the heterodyne mode. STM will be used to study the mode of growth of noble metals including Rh, Pd, Pt and Au on semiconducting WO3 and Sn02 substrates and the dynamic behaviour of clusters and their surroundings will be studied by scanning tunnelling spectroscopy. We will establish procedures for the controlled manipulation of clusters on surfaces. The AFM program will first concentrate on WO3 to establish benchmark links with the STM experiments. Metal deposition and mobility on the important catalyst support materials A1203 and Ce02 will then be investigated. To help identify the role of defects in promoting or inhibiting nucleation and diffusion of clusters on A1203 surfaces, patterned substrates modified by electron beam lithography will be studied as well as crystal surfaces prepared by conventional techniques. The results of our program are expected to have an important impact on our understanding of the mechanisms which lead to aggregation dispersed metals on oxide supported catalysts.
