The proposed research will develop the use of chiral palladium catalysts to achieve the desymmetrisation of symmetrical divinylhalide substrates. Both 1, 1- and 1, 2-divinylhalides will be explored, providing structurally varied products. A desymmetrissing approach such as this is expected to provide material of high enantiomeric excess as it combines an initial enantioselective operation with a kinetic resolution. The range of reactions that can be used to functionalise the chiral palladium species produced will be examined so as to provide a further element of diversity. The functionalised enatiomerically enriched products will be exploited in synthetic applications. In particular a total synthesis of the analgesic alkaloid epibatidine will be undertaken.
