Medical and veterinary ultrasound for diagnosis is now extremely widely used in clinical practice. It is one of the major medical imaging technologies. The commonly used modes are pulse-echo real-time B-scanning and Colour Doppler imaging. These are tow dimensional imaging techniques which can be difficult to interpret especially when there is abnormal anatomy or pathology present. Digital electronic technology has now advanced to a stage where 3D imaging is viable. This should assist the interpretation of images and provide new applications. However it will be important to preserve the real-time aspect of scanning whereby the operator can search quickly through the body to find the site of clinical interest. The applicants have devised a novel 3D imaging approach which retains the real-time fast searching option by integrating the real-time 2D mode with a small volume 3D option. They have called this the '2D/3D duplex mode' since the small 3D volume can be located at any region of the 2D image. In many ways his is less demanding than the large volume 3D mode and hence compatible with the Industrial Partner's policy of supplying portable scanners to a wide diversity of customers.
