Summary on Grant Application Form
Acoustic design guidelines for the built environment are generally based on results of measurements using samples of young subjects with normal hearing levels. Received wisdom indicated that elderly people with technical presbycusis face acoustic problems in the built environment, some of which could be meliorated by appropriate prioritization for future work. Consequently, the proposed project is one a one year pilot study to identify problems faced by the elderly in the built environment. The project will use new qualitative research methods which examine the patterns of use within the built environment to examine the influence of acoustic cues. A combination of questionnaire, diaries, one to one semi-structured interviews and focus groups will be used to extract he information.
