Summary on Grant Application Form
The US Air Force and military aircraft industry united with the Massachusetts Instate of Technology (MIT) in 1993 to launch the Lean Aircraft Institute (LAI). A significant output from the US LAI is the Lean Enterprise Model (LEM), which is both a reference tool and a framework that integrates and disseminates lean principles, practices and metrics, as well as the data and results from case studies and benchmarking. The proposed research under the UK initiative would provide a similar by broader framework and model tailored to UK aerospace industry conditions that was consistent with the US one.The initial one year programme of work proposed here will concentrate on the delivery of a fast track set of implementable tools and process, maximising work already carried out elsewhere in the UK and in the US. The programme will also identify gaps in existing knowledge and the areas of best value added data collection. The society of British Aerospace Companies (SBAC) and its member sill be the collaborators in the programme. For this initiative to succeed a longer tem programme will be required which will outlined and costed during this first year.
