It is known that Levy processes can describe the light scattered from a random rough surface and it is believed they may also play a significant role in describing transport effects underlying otherwise inexplicable phenomena in macroscopic confinement systems. This proposal seeks to discover the commonality between these apparently disparate areas through developing the theory of |multi-step Levy random walks employing an information theoretical approach. The number of steps in the walk will be taken as a random variable and distributions will be obtained for these fluctuating walks in arbitrary dimension. Constraints on arbitrary (i.e. fractional) and renormalisation moments of the distributions will incorporate fractal behaviour into the model distributions in an entirely natural way. These generalised generalised models will be used to inform understanding of the transport processes that occur in sandpiles and of particles confined by magnetic fields. The links between compound Levy processes, so derived, and K-distributed random processes will be explored, together with their application to the scattering of coherent radiation by random phase screens.
