The next IFIP International Conference on distributed System Platforms and Open Distributed Processing (Middleware'98) will take place on September 15-18 in the Lake District, UK. The conference is concerned with all aspects of the systems support for advanced distributed applications including case studies on the use of such technologies and examples of advanced distributed applications.Lancaster University is co-ordinating this event with Prof. G Blair acting as General Chair, Dr. Nigel Davies as Programme Co-Chair and Dr. Geoff Coulson as Local Arrangements Chair. We are requesting sponsorship from EPSRC in the form of 10 bursaries to enable EPSRC-Funded PhD Students in the UK University to attend this event. The sponsorship will contribute considerably to the training of PhD students in this country; students will have the opportunity to attend the tutorial on topics such as DCOM and COBRA, to hear presentations on recent developments in this fast moving field, and also to contribute to discussions. There is a plan to have a PhD forum at the conference where students can present the preliminary findings of their research. The sponsorship will also contribute more generally towards making this event a success and will be acknowledged in all publicity related to the event.
