The aim of the project is to enable photoluminescent liquid crystal displays to reach the performance level needed to enter the market for high resolution displays by incorporating the photoluminescent colour screens inside the liquid crystal devices. These photoluminescent colour screens are analogous to the microdot colour filter arrays used in current liquid crystal colour display panels. An important aspect is the evaluation of novel new organic photoluminescent materials which appear to offer efficiency, spectral diversity and the promise of great flexibility in processing. A second aspect is to investigate adapting the techniques current in producing RGB phosphor arrays in colour cathode ray tubes to the specific requirements of PL-LCD's. If successful, the project will demonstrate (in small test devices) the possibility that the PC-LCD advantages of wide viewing angle plus excellent colour rendition, efficiency and a major enhancement of multiplexability can be brought to high resolution colour displays such as computer monitor.
