Transition metals (e.g. Mn, Fe, Zr, Sc) which form intermetallic dispersoids with aluminium are widely used to control recrystallization and grain growth in industrial aluminium alloys. However, the interactions between substructure development and precipitation in such alloys is only poorly understood, although a feasibility study has highlighted several important aspects of the annealing, including a strong dependence on grain orientation. By studying the evolution of microstructures and microtexture in a series of such binary alloys under carefully controlled conditions, the local interactions between the particles and high and low angle boundaries will be identified and quantified and correlated with the final microstructure and texture.A recently formulated theory of recovery, recrystallization and grain growth will be modified to incorporate such complexities and the extended theory will be used within a model which will predict the annealing kinetics and the microstructure and texture in deformed and annealed supersaturated or pre-precipitated alloys. Data obtained about the rates of phase changes and their dependence on process and local microstructural parameters will be used as input to the model, which will ultimately be capable of application to a wider range of alloys.
