Rheology is a powerful technique for indirecly probing the structure of concentrated dispersions under shear. NMP is a family of techniques that can probe the dynamics and thus, structure of the various components in polymer containing concentrated dispersions. Of most relevance, is the fact that NMR can distinguish solid (bound to particle) nd liquid (free/mobile in solution) polymer environments. In this regard, NMR is unique. The emerging field of Rheo-NMR is the combination of these two techniques. To date, reho-NMR has been limited to high field imaging of the velocity profiles in shear thinning polymer solutions. This project, seeks funds to design and build a lower field instrument capable of studying the structure of polymers in concentrated particulate dispersions. The results will be used to develop a computer modeel of the structure of the polymer layer under shear.The type of question we seek to address in this work includes;a) the vastly different shear rate dependancies of carbon black dispersions differing only in fractal nature of the particle structure - this is oof significant importance to ink concentrate formulations.and b) the concept of 'tack' - this is thought to be linked to polymer reorientation after shear.
