Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed study is a fundamental investigation of the effect that coadsorbed species have on the local registry and ordering of a molecular species, thiophene, adsorbed on a metal surface. The strength of this proposal is that in a single project synchrotron based structural probes (NEXAFS and NIXSW) in conjunction with laboratory based vibrational spectroscopic (VEELS) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED) measurements will be combined to give a full description of the orientation, local registry, ordering and molecular integrity of the adsorbed species. Fundamental surface science studies which deal with issues of the structure and bonding within coadsorption systems are vital if a deeper understanding of surface reactivity is to be developed. In this context the proposed work provides an ideal opportunity to study a novel and previously unstudied coadsorption system which will be of interest to the wider scientific community involved in surface reactivity at interfaces such as electro and catalytic chemists. In summary, the proposed work is high quality science which is of interest to surface scientists and a more general scientific community. The project requires a modest financial investment from the EPSRC and makes full use of resources (UHV equipped laboratory) already in place at Glasgow.
