Summary on Grant Application Form
Recent work shows that a wide variety of new fulleride structures are accessible if counterions more complex than simple mixtures of alkali metals are studied. In order to develop predictable syntheses of these structures, detailed crystallographic information on a range of complex fullerides is needed. This, combined with measurements of their physical properties, can then feed back into the synthesis of fullerides with enhanced properties. The proposal requests support of diffraction studies of new fullerides, predominately to allow access to central facilities both to refine structures and as a key part of the syntheses themselves. The areas to be studied are listed in the previous section: in (1), the aim is to investigate the control of fulleride structure by N-D... p hydrogen bonding while (2) is aimed at studying the interaction between localised 4fn and delocalised fulleride derived electrons and (3) is motivated by the contrast in higher fulleride structures and properties with those of C60. Facilities access, underpinned by the laboratory diffractometer and analysis software, is essential for the development of fulleride solid state chemistry.
