A 10 gramme batch scale process reactor will be constructed for the preparation of carbon and fibres. Early stages of the programme will concentrate on the development of catalysts and process conditions to allow fibres of highly graphitic structure to be produced. Modelling studies have shown that highly ordered fibres are the key to hydrogen storage, a result borne out by early experimental findings.Fibres produced will be screened, using a static over-pressure adsorption test at pressures up to 200 bar. Promising candidate materials will be progresses for electrochemical evaluation.Preliminary electrochemical evaluation will involve the preparation micro-electrodes based on bundles of nanfibres and will allow the characterisation of the surface properties of the fibres together with an approximate measure of candidate materials in resin and preparing a polished surface for testing. RDE testing will be conducted in a high pressure cell constructed for the project and will yield information about electrode potential, reversibility, and the nature electrode reactions which are occurring.The utility of the electrode systems studied for battery energy storage systems will be critically assessed.
