First generation lithium-ion batteries are already a commercial success. There is, however, much demand from manufacturers of portable electronic devices (including mobile telephones and lap-top computers) for second generation systems with substantially improved energy storage (energy density), delivered using lower cost and lower toxicity materials that at present. Environmental pressures for electric vehicles also demand better and cheaper lithium batteries. Key to such improvements is development of new positive electrode materials.We propose to synthesise new lithium transition metal oxides mainly on Mn, Co and Fe, with tunnel, layered and mesoporous structures, using a variety of techniques including templating in solution, ion exchange, and hydrothermal synthesis. Then to charaterise their performance in lithium-ion cells, providing both an understanding of the structure/property relationships and data from which industry may evaluate the commercial potential of the new materials.
