Summary on Grant Application Form
The desirable characteristics of a rechargeable battery positive electrode are high voltage, large capacity at high voltage, good cyclability and construction from cheap, non toxic materials. Existing electrode materials, which have not been designed with all these criteria in mind, generally have the drawback of limited capacity at high enough voltages for use in rocking chair cells. There is therefore a clear need to develop, using innovative chemistry, potential new materials demonstrating the desirable features in addition to development work on existing compounds. This program, through targeted synthesis using specialized novel techniques, will be aimed specifically at complex lithium oxides of high oxidation state, non toxic, first row transition metals. Materials identified as having the potential for use as a battery electrode will be fully charactised in terms of their electrochemistry, specifically lithium ion diffusion, discharge behavior and cyclability.
