Summary on Grant Application Form
The formation of zirconacyclopent-anes, -enes, and -dienes, including zirconaindanes by intra- or inter-molecular co-cyclisation of alkenes will be followed by insertion of metal carbenoids R1R2CMX and R1R2C=CMX to afford novel zirconacyclohexanoids. Further elaboration by metathesis, halogenation, carbonylation, isocyanide insertion, copper catalysed reactions, or further carbenoid insertions will efficiently afford a wide range of organic structures. Up to 5 C-C bonds may formed in these tandem reaction sequences in the zirconocene template.Hydrozirconation of alkenes and alkynes affords acyclic organozirconium species. Insertion of metal carbenoids gives more complex organometallics which still retain a carbon zirconium bond capable of further elaboration. Particularly useful is the insertion into vinylzirconium species to afford functionalised allyl zirconium complexes which will react with a wide range of electrophiles to give useful organic fragments.
