Summary on Grant Application Form
The project has four main components. The first involves analysis of data obtained from experiments on a 75th scale model of an FPSO fitted with damping devices carried out in the offshore wave basin at the Danish Hydraulics Laboratory. The second relates to experiments carried out on more detailed model so the devices in U-tubes and wave channels at Imperial College and Newcastle University. The third component comprises the development of a theoretical model of damping devices based on slotted and perforated plates, and its inclusion in an otherwise standard seakeeping package for the purpose of predicting the motions of floating bodies fitted with such devices. The final component involves an assimilation and synthesis of the theoretical and experimental results generated by the project and their application in practical engineering situations. The deliverables include data relating to the hydrodynamic characteristics of various perforated plates with potential use in a variety of applications; a theoretical model of such devices; a seakeeping program with the model incorporated; design recommendations concerning the use of such devices.
