Summary on Grant Application Form
The focus of this project is legacy data rather than legacy programs. The project is concerned with applying advanced software engineering to support new product development processes in manufacturing industry. We are particularly concerned with the problems of managing legacy product and process data, which may be required by distributed NPD Teams in different organisations. Based on Internet technologies we will investigate how data repositories of legacy product data can be created and accessed by manufacturing engineers in NPD teams. This will be informed by a study of NPD processes in our industrial partners to assess the relationships between process activities and legacy product and process data. In addition, we will investigate how experience of engineers involved in NPD teams may be captured in an organisational memory and made available to future team members. Again the focus of this work will be on the problems of using legacy product and process data in evolving NPD processes. Dissemination activities will be concerned with generalising the project results for the manufacturing engineering and software engineering communities.
