This project is based on existing research work at Durham and will develop an agent-based system approach to roll design. The project will be focused on the application of system integration theory and technology to accommodate changes in business process, specifically changes necessitated by British Steel's move to Centralised Roll Design. It will investigate approaches to design adaptation and variation, using concepts from software engineering and artificial intelligence applied to engineering design, together with domain knowledge from both engineering and the steel industry. The project will investigate various forms of knowledge used in roll design and develop a system in which these are integrated to better support designers and managers procuring rolls.British Steel has a recognised business need to centralise their roll design process and have initiated a business-focused project to accomplish this. They are introducing centralised support for Finite Element analysis as well as centralised recording of known roll designs. However, system-engineering research is required to effectively determine appropriate computer aided support for the roll design process utilising these new facilities in an integrated system. In the CARD project, we propose a novel application of agent-based design in order to achieve a flexible and evolavable solution.
