The current interest in new electronic materials for use in thin film electroluminescent displays has, in recent years, focused primarily upon the use of conjugated organic polymers. These polymeric materials suffer from several drawbacks; they have broad emission profiles; polymers emitting in the blue region are costly and difficult to prepare; they are inherently inefficient (the maximum theoretical efficiency is only 25%) and the work cycle of the material is essentially a destructive process. With these points in mind, this proposal describes a collaborative programme between the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Engineering Science at the University of Oxford, and Opsys Limited, directed towards he preparation of a new generation of displays based on organolanthanide phosphors. The materials decried herein offer potential chromaticities, device efficiencies and phosphor durability superior to current technology. We aim to pioneer use of the antenna effect to sensitise the luminescent metal centres and fluorinated ligands to frustrate non-radiative decay pathways thereby increasing device efficiency at both the activation and emission stages of he display process. All of the described phosphors are based on organolanthanide materials which utilise the narrow spectral emission properties of the metal centres for improved device chromaticities.
