Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed programme seeks to understand factors which control the mesomorphism and transition temperatures in four series of structurally related rhenium based metallomesogens. Thus, in one series of imine-based complexes complexation leads to a substantial lowering of mesophase stability, while in two others (bipyridines and diazabutadienes), complexation appears to have little effect. In the last two series, it is possible to identify substantial lateral dipoles, while in the first, these are absent. The synthesis of a new, fourth series (amidines) is proposed whose dipolar characteristics are intermediate between the two extremes. These families of materials will be studied by dielectric spectroscopy. These studies will be complemented by a systematic structure/property investigation of the low-melting Re-imine complexes which will lead to predictive capability in the control of mesomorphism and transition temperatures.
