Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research programme will initially concentrate on the development of the mathematical model. This will include the development of appropriate boundary conditions which describe the effects of time dependant changes in the condition of the steel. An iterative solution to the equations describing polarisation behaviour will be used in the model to give it a dependance on variables such as the corrosion rate. The time dependance may be generated using a previously developed model of chloride extraction under cathodic protection conditions coupled to an empirical relationship between the chloride level and the corrosion rate. Experimental data to validate the model will be generated by applying C.P. to reinforced concrete specimens to represent conditions under which C.P. might both fail and be successful. The protection provided to multiple layers of reinforcing steel and of the effect of varous anode geometries on the distribution of protection will then be analysed. In addition a theoretical bases for the choice of connection spacing to the anode system and reinforcing steel will be developed. The model will be made available on the internet.
