Previous work on switched reluctance motors has focussed on either machines with short or fullty pitched windings . No work has been done to date, into hybrid switched reluctance motors utilising both fully and short pitched windings in one motor. The objective of this research is to explore the benefits of using such a structure particularly for motors with low phase numbers. Such a motor would potentially have a reduced commutation time; a smaller DC link capacitance; higher strrating and low speed torque without compromising torque or iron losses at rated speed.The optimal design of lamination geometry and power electronics will be examined. Two motor and associated electronic will be designed and constructed. For one, the short pitched windings will provide most of the torque at rated speed. For the second the fully pitched windings will supply most of the rated torque. To this end the finite element analysis software available commerically will need to be modified. The project will not only benefit the collaborators and wider electrical machines engineering community through the development of innovative software and drives, but also stimulate interaction between the collaborating companies.
