Summary on Grant Application Form
Preliminary experiments show that a retro-reflecting Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal SLM illuminated with an interrogating laser beam can provide robust data transmission at several k/bits /s over ranges of several metres. In combination with a simple optical receiver this provides an attractive, low cost data transceiver. This device has low power consumption and low link loss, and hs the potential for low cost manufacture. Such a device could be incorporated in Smartcards, inventory 'tags' or any other system that can be read optically. The proposed programme will investigate systems consisting of a 'reader' and 'tag' and techniques for bi-directional communication between them at low (kbits/s) data rates using free space optical channels. The tags will contain the transceiver and control electronics that allow storage and data processing. Devices will be fabricated and tested in an access control application, the transceiver being used in an intelligent security badge and in an inventory control application, as an intelligent label.
