Arterial disease can lead to stroke and cardiac arrest and is thus a major cause of death and disability. It is known that atheromatous plaque develops in regions of arteries win which the blood velocity gradient near the wall (the wall shear rate) is low. Currently, this is not measured routinely. It would be of great academic and clinical interest to develop a non-invasive technique to measure wall shear rate in order to predict those patients most a t risk of atheromatous disease.We intend developing MRI techniques to measure fluid in three dimensions. Development work will be performed on in vitro flow test objects, initially using steady flow in straight, rigid tubes, but later progressing to realistically shaped tubes, pulsatile flow and branching tubes. Form the 3-dimensional flow information, it will be possible to estimate wall shear rate, taking into account the geometry of the vessel.We will develop computer software for visualisation of the flow patterns, and we will compare the measurements with predictions from Computational Fluid Dynamics.The technique will then be applied to the measurement of carotid artery flow patterns in normal human subjects and in patients with varying degrees of arterial disease.
