The visiting fellow will employ semiclassical radiation theory to study the laser phase dependence of observables arising from laser molecule interacts, for the shared initial population problem. He will initially use approximation methods, namely the rotating wave approximation and time-dependant perturbation theory, to obtain analytical results for the observables to exhibit explictly how they depend on parameters characterising both the molecule and laser.These results will indicate how the observables, which include the populations of the species involved, depend on laser and phase and how this dependence is altered by the changing other relevant parameters. The findings will be checked, via model systems, by using exact numerical techniques to solve the time-dependant wave equation in the relevant matrix representations. The results will then be applied to various experimental situations, e.g. fluorescence and ionisation from selected excited states, with the objectives of making contributions to the important problem of how to optimise the (single) laser phase control of molecular processes induced by laser action. With his experience in semi-classical time dependent theory, and its applications, he will also play an important role in studying the connections between the treatments of laser phase semiclassically and quantum electrodynamically.
