How are objects in a scene recognised as keeping their shape depsite changes in the image they project onto the retina as the observer's viewpoint changes? In this project, psychophysical methods will be used with high-resolution vector and raster-graphics displays to investigate the image cues that make such performance possible and, in particular, to test the relevance of recent models of shape perception based on image parts and spatial relations between parts. Separate experiments will address the problems of a) whether viewpoint invariant parts are visual invariants; b) the perceived invariance of viewpoint-variant relationships between possibly non-invariant parts; c) the identification of spatial relations assumed to be computed between parts; d) the stability of spatial relations in comparison with observed failures in recognition performance; e) whether parts and spatial relations are treated separately by the visual system; and f) how parts and spatial relations depend on the level of visual attention. The benefits of the project lie in improving our understanding of how human shape recognition works and in exploiting that understanding in human-factors applications and in the design of machine-vision systems for search, detection and recognition.
