Summary on Grant Application Form |
Long lengths of superconductor incorporating the BSCCO phases are now being fabricated by academic and industrial groups. Because of the properties of the BSCCO phases, such conductors are best suited to applications operating at low temperatures, say below 40K. We aim to enhance their useful Jc at these temperatures, particularly in high magnetic fields, by controlled formation of defects of specific size and shape via phase decomposition. We will investigate both the BSCCO 2212 and 2223 phases with a variety of additions and under a range of oxygen pressures (using Coulometric Titration), in single crystals and in short-sample tapes. The resulting defects will be fully characterised structurally (TEM, XRD, EDX, etc), and the consequent pinning (and also the possible change in superconducting anisotropy) investigated by magnetrometry. In collaboration with other groups, academic and industrial, we will apply these approaches to the processing of conductors. We will use magnetometry, transport and Hall probes to determine the factors limiting Jc in these and other conductors. Increasing emphasis will be given to AC Losses, with further development of a novel bolometric technique, which should allow the losses to be measured in the presence of substantial AC magnetic fields, thus better-approximating operational conditions.
