Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose a theoretical investigation of highly correlated situations arising in electron and photo impact ionisation where 2 active target electrons are involved. We plan a study of a whole range of double excitation processes, i.e. (e, 2e) excitation-ionisation, (e, 3e) collisions, (d,2e) photo double ionisation and (e, 2e) excitation-autoionisation. In each case the target in the first instance will be Helium. The methods we propose to use and develop form a coherent basis for the study of all these problems and are at the forefront of computational atomic physics. The programme will interact strongly with experimental work in the field, building upon and extending collaborations which have been established over the past few years with experimental groups in Europe and the United States.
