Summary on Grant Application Form
A series of component tests is planned to investgate the effect of high temperatures (400-800 C) on the strength and stiffness of the tension and compression zones of beam to column endplate connections. Tests on a range of T-stub configurations and column webs will be conducted at a number of temperatures, thus establishing a strength/stiffness and temperature relationship. This contrasts with the usual approach which is to load a specimen and raise the temperature until failure. The data obtained will be used to validate a finite element analysis program, to0 be developed in parallel with the experimental work. By combining the response of the tension and compression zones the overall moment-rotation-thrust response will be obtained. With a reliable analytical approach the behaviour of connections of vried geometry may be studied and the effect of joint performance at elevated temperatures on overall frme behaviour investigated.
