Summary on Grant Application Form
The research is aimed at extending Large Eddy Simulation to the calculations of the flow and chemical reaction processes in hydrocarbon fuel burning systems so as to yield an accurate and reliable method of predicting the properties of practical combusting flows. It involves fundamental modelling studies of sub-grid turbulent fluxes and dissipative aspects of scalar quantities such as mixture fraction and chemical species mass fraction and the sub-grid contributions to species formation rates. The research is closely associated with that being undertaken within the EPSRC funded Consortium on Computational Combustion for Engineering Applications (Cray T3D) and the DNS combustion results arising as an outcome of this will provide an aid to the construction and testing of the necessary sub-grid models. The performance of the devised LES method will be evaluated by application to a model can-type gas-turbine combustion chamber and comparison with the available and extensive measurements.
