Summary on Grant Application Form
An opportunity exists for a compact, low cost device capable of generating hydrogen from commonly viable liquid fuels. The proposed work addresses this opportunity be seeking to design and construct a 5kW gasoline-processor (including CO clean-up) with a volume of 10 litres, mass of 10kg, height of 20cm, and response time of 5s.Reading University will examine reforming catalyst for their ability to convert gasoline to hydrogen by partial oxidation and by autothermal reactions. The performance of the best catalyst(s) will be mapped by changing the reaction variable, operating conditions and process parameters. Reading will also be responsible for devising strategies for controlling de-activation.Johnson Matthey will use the results from Reading to engineer, test and optimise a prototype reactor, which will form the basis of a modular 5 kW fuel-processor. Eminox will refine the reactor design and make it suitable for multiple manufacture; Eminox will also engineer a manifold for the reformer, construct the appropriate number of reactors, and assemble the CO clean-up stages. Johnson Matthey and Rover will then integrate the reformer and clean-up stages. Finally Rover will use performance data form the integrated system to simulate real-life operation, and to assess its potential for vehicle applications.
