Summary on Grant Application Form
It is propsed to fabricate a range of sensors based on single-crystal fibres with a view to developing novel operating regimes for fibre-optic sensors. The temperature/strain dependance of the natural birefringence of these crystal fibres will be investigated to determine the effect of these measurands. Spectroscopy based sensors employing doped fibres will similarly be studied with the intention of exploiting the narrower emission linewidths found in crystalline materials to provide higher sensitivity and resolution sensors when compared to glass based systems.Novel sensors will also originate from work on the direct modulation of the fibre diameter to produce Bragg gratings. Numerical modelling of the coupled mode equations will be used predictively to facilitate grating design. The reflection and transmission properties of these gratings will for the basis of the sensor. These sensors will be used in high temperature and high strain demonstrators.
