Summary on Grant Application Form
The study of the stereodynamics of elementary reactions using laser based pump and probe techniques has focused to date almost exclusively on the measurement of angular momentum alignment in chemical reactions. However, new theoretical work (in which the applicant has been directly involved) has established that for direct elementary reactions, or those proceeding via short-lived intermediates, product angular momentum orientation (in addition to the more traditional alignment) measurements should provide a more revealing diagnostic of reaction mechanism. This proposal seeks to provide, for the first time, experimentally derived product alignment and orientation data for the H atom reactions with O2, H2O and N2O.
