Summary on Grant Application Form
This application is for synchrotron beamtime for a portfolio of projects. The projects have been combined into one application after discussion with, and on the advice of the Facilities Programme Manager of the EPSRC. The work will form part of the PhD research of three PhD students, currently entering their second year of study. The three projects are A Study of the Microstructural Changes of Dry and wet Lyocell on Tensile Deformation, Morphology/Property Relationships in Sutures under Loading Conditions found in the Body and Studies of Biodegradable Copolymers of Polyhydroxyalkanoates. They are related in that they use time resolved X-ray scattering techniques to solve polymer microstructures. Both time resolved tensile testing with SAXS/WAXS and time resolved thermal analysis with SAXS/WAXS are proposed as appropriate. The work is both industrially relevant, as witnessed by the current involvement of two industrial sponsors, and of fundamental interest. It will also contribute to the training of postgraduate students.
