Summary on Grant Application Form
i) In the simple kinematic model of continuously defective crystals introduced by Davini, and developed by Davini, Parry, Fonseca, many elastic invariants related to lattice vector fields have interesting geometrical and topological interpretations (for example, the average linking number of dislocation loops in an integral elastic invariant). The VF will try to construct a corresponding thermodynamical structure which does a minimum of violence to the classical integral balance laws and entropy-production inequality. We would hope that most features of the new structures would have ready interpretations in terms of a) relevant elastic invariants and b) the slips, or rearrangements, that enter into the kinematic model as changes of state that preserve the elastic invariants.ii) Silhavy will combine features of work by Parry on rank one convexity (R1C) in the plane, and his own work on representations of the R1C condition for isotropic materials, to study the issue of whether or not R1C implies quasiconvexity for isotropic materials in the planar case (in the first instance).
