Summary on Grant Application Form
Complex interactions between consolidation, creeo and ageing of soils are still not well understood. Uncertainty remains as whether the mechanisms for the observed increases in apparent preconsolidation pressure, strength and stiffness with time are chemical, physical or both. As many case histories illustrate, an understanding of the process responsible for time-dependent behaviour is required for proper design and interpretation of quality control during and after construction. In the proposed study, various mechanisms of time effects will be examined by an extensive laboratory programme usinf the triaxial system conbined with P- and S-wave velocities and electrical properties measurements and the hollow cylinder torsional shear system. The laboratory data will be comared to the field data contributed by various collectors. Time dependent soil models will be developed permitting engineers to analyse their problems with considerations of time effect. Investigation will be performed for actual field case data provided by the collaborators.
