The proposed study aims to improve numerical modelling of swash zone processes based on the acquisition of new and detailed data from both laboratory and field studies. In particular, the study will focus on the comparison of swash hydrodynamics and sediment dynamics on sand and, importantly, shingle beaches in order to identify and quantify the role of infiltration and groundwater flows in the swash zone. The research will concentrate on improvements to a numerical model developed at Imperial (Nairn 1990) which is now used extensively by consultant engineers. Model development will concentrate on improved predictions of accretionary event, as no models currently in use are able to describe these processes with any accuracy. This will require the addition of a swash subroutine to the numerical model, which will include infiltration and grain size effects. Fundamental swash processes will be examined through laboratory experiments designed to measure infiltration rates into dry ad partially saturated sediments and the fluid volume exchange between the swash zone and the beach. Laboratory studies and numerical modelling will be used to calibrate and validate the model. Model predictions will be compared o measurements of swash hydrodynamics and sediment dynamics on sand and shingle beaches.
