Summary on Grant Application Form
The ultimate scope of the project is to build and efficient system for imaging the living eye with axial resolution about 15 microns. Two methodologies are available to produce high resolution images of the eye, confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (SLO) and optical coherence tomography ) OCT). New implementations of OCT systems were investigated on the previous EPSRC grant GR/J34699. The proposed grant aims to combine both methodologies to produce a new instrument. SLO does not have the depth resolution of the OCT and OCT cannot operate as a stand alone system (images are somewhat difficult to interpret because they show only fragments of anatomical structures due to the very high discrimination.) The two groups involved in the present project will share their expertise, IOL with more than 5 years experience in SLO and UKC with 3 years experience in OCT. The research and design of the instrument will be undertaken at UKC, the design, mode of operation etc. will be modified in accordance with the clinical experience gained at IOL.
