Part two research programme is proposed here based around a unique scanning Hall probe microscope capable of imaging discrete vortices which has been developed under an earlier EPSRC grant. Part I is a programme of enabling research for those objectives is to establish the structure of the H-T phase diagram of BSCCO single crystals (e.g. nature of melting, spinning and decoupling lines) and examine in detail the way in which vortices interact with columnar defects (e.g. in related fields). This will allow us to map out the useful operation range for these highly anisotropic superconductors and yield insights into ways to modify it. The research complements and enhances other internationally recognised UK work in the area of vortex physics, and will be performed in collaboration with leading scientists at four other British universities. Part II is a continuation of earlier work on YBCO thin films in collaboration with Professor G Humphreys at the DRA Malvern. Professor Humphreys wishes to optimise material production for his ambitious peronducting device programme. Key objectives are an understanding of oxygen depletion and vortex nucleation at patterned edges as well as the origin of flux noise.
