Summary on Grant Application Form
This research programme concerns the incorporation of new light sources and spectrally-based imaging systems that will be compatible with minimally invasive clinical procedures. Specifically, the collaboration between the Department of Physics at St Andrews University and the Department of Surgery at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee is targeted at the early detection of potential cancers of the GI tract. In all cases, early detection is vital to the success of any subsequent treatment. Our work so far represents a useful proof of principle for our approach, successfully identifying regions of known cancer. However, the real benefit of our research will lie in its application to the detection of early cancers. This grant proposal is a request for additional equipment components so that we can progress the development of this system, integrating it fully into a routine testing program for high-risk patients at Ninewells hospital. We need to improve both the system robustness and sensitivity.
