Summary on Grant Application Form
Supramolecular chemistry has enabled the development of a fundamental understanding of weak, noncovalent intermolecular forces and how they relate to self-assembly processes. The exploitation of this knowledge in the fields of materials and polymer science requires the ready availability of a suitable, general purpose building block which is chemically robust and easily modified with which to construct novel polymeric architectures via self-assembly processes. The aim of the research proposed here is to provide the synthetic materials chemist with such a building block and investigate its application in self-assembled superstructures. The chemistry of the boron-nitrogen heteroaromatics is underdeveloped and their uniquecombination of mutual recognition and reactivity make them ideal candidates on which to base the design and synthesis of novel materials.
