The UK leather industry currently processes around 20 million sheepskins and in doing so quantities of organic and aqueous waste containing detergents, which cost the leather industry in excess of 6 m per annum in dealing with the waste. The use of supercritical carbon dioxide offers a more environmentally friendly method of defatting leather, in which the fats extracted can be readily separated from the solvent and which avoids the waste problem. Carbon dioxide can be recycled in a process and the small amount lost to the atmosphere originated as a by-product in other processes and does not add to the greenhouse effect. The fats recovered could be sold as by-product of the process developed.
