The proposed research is a collaboration between the Departments of Materials and Mineral and Mining Engineering at Leeds, British Chrome Chemicals and London Scandinavian Metallurgical Company. The projects aims to recover chromium from Fe203-rich BCC waste (14%Cr203) and Al203-rich LSM waste (8%Cr203). The techniques used for recovering chromium are based on selective flocculation to enrich chromium-containing phases followed by controlled reduction of chromium oxide wither in the presence of Na2CO3 or NaSO4. The reaction with Na2CO3 under controlled reducing conditions will lead to the formation of metallic iron and Na2Cr204. Similarly by raising the oxygen potential, sodium chromite could also co-exist with Fe304 which will provide an effective method of separation of chromium-rich phases. In the presence of Na2SO4, the FeS/Na2Cr204 combination is a stable equilibrium under reducing conditions. The Fe-Cr alloy will be derived from the reduction of (Fe,Cr) S matte. Fe/Cr melting trials will be carried out at Leeds/LSM and Na2Cr204 and chromate trials will be performed at BCC. The refractory oxides will be anlaysed for residual chromium oxide. The results from this research will enable BCC to recycle 110,000 t per annum of waste and help to protect environment. The results will also help improving the main stream process.
